From “Baltimore is Best” to “Maryland, You Are Beautiful,” from the dining rooms of the White House to the deserts of the Middle East, from public schools all over the state to the most prestigious private schools, Avalon Industries, Inc., of Baltimore, Maryland, has earned the reputation as a quality manufacturer of specialty sewn fabric products and embroidered and screen-printed promotional items.
In the spring of 1981, Lou Pellegrino, Harry Crouse and Bud Happel could have called themselves “Three Men and a Sewing Machine,” but opted instead for a name associated with the history of Maryland…Avalon. Working out of a suburban Baltimore basement, the three owners initially focused on the industrial market and the U. S. Department of Defense. From there, business expanded to include the public and private school markets. Avalon Industries now has over 30 employees and they occupy an 11,500 ft2 area of the Raleigh Industrial Building on Wicomico Street in West Baltimore. “We attribute our success to staying in the markets we know best and adapting our products to customer needs.” says Avalon’s president, Lou Pellegrino.
From the beginning, the company has supported the men and women of the U.S. military by producing portable vinyl showers, covers for their reverse osmosis water purification systems, brass link catch bag assemblies for machine guns and many other defense related items. Avalon Industries is a certified small business “federal hub zone” manufacturer and its quality system is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Avalon also manufacturers various straps, bags, covers and carrying cases for industrial applications. Manufacturers of everything from medical instruments to railcars use fabric products designed and produced by Avalon Industries.
Schools, businesses and organizations call on Avalon to provide promotional products like T-shirts, casual wear, active wear, aprons, tote bags, back packs and briefcases. All are professionally screen printed or embroidered to promote awareness and engender team spirit.
